What this site stores about you, why, for how long, who else handles it, and what you can do about it. Reading the job market evidence needs no account and records nothing about who you are.
What we collect
Only what you choose to save
Nothing is saved because you looked at something. We store what you add yourself:
- the occupations you keep on My Career
- your job search answers: where, the lowest pay you would take, work pattern, contract and industries
- jobs you save, with your notes and progress
- examples you write down for your evidence bank
- interview details, including the names of any interviewers you add
- offers you record, and the Getting ready items you tick
No account needed
Your saved items are linked to this browser, not to you
We do not ask for your name or email, and the site does not offer accounts at the moment. Your saved items are linked to a random key held in a cookie, and we store that key only in a scrambled form. So clearing your cookies loses the link, and your list will not follow you to another device.
Why we use it
To show you what you saved, and to keep the site working
We use what you save only to show it back to you, and technical details only to keep the site secure and running. We count how often each occupation's page is viewed each day, without recording who viewed it. We do not sell your data, share it with advertisers or employers, or use it to build a profile of you.
Checking a job advert
An AI model may help read it, and nothing is saved
When you check an advert, our server reads it with fixed text rules. It may also be sent once to an AI model run by a third-party provider, which helps pick out what the advert says. We do not save the advert, write its text to our logs, or put it in a web address. Please leave out personal details you do not need to include.
Lawful basis
Why we are allowed to use it
We rely on legitimate interests to run the site and keep it secure, and on providing what you asked for when you save something or check an advert. Every cookie we set is needed for the site to work, so none of them asks for your consent.
Who else handles it
Only the services that run the site
Your data is handled by the services the site runs on: our hosting, Microsoft Azure in the UK; Cloudflare, which carries traffic to the site; and, for advert checks, the AI model provider. The job market figures come from the Office for National Statistics and contain no personal data.
How long we keep it
Until you remove it
Saved items stay until you remove them, which you can do on each page. Your job search answers can be changed but not yet removed from the page. Nothing is deleted automatically yet. If you clear your cookies, the site can no longer find your saved items, but they are not deleted from our database.
Your rights
You can ask to see, correct or delete it
Under UK data protection law you can ask for a copy of your data, and ask for it to be corrected or deleted. You can also object to how it is used, or ask us to limit it. If you are unhappy with how your data is handled, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office.
Security
How we protect it
Connections to the site are encrypted, and your browser's key is stored only in a scrambled form, never as the key itself. No service online can promise perfect security, so please keep sensitive details, such as your health or finances, out of your notes.
Cookies
Four cookies, all needed for the site to work
None of them tracks you, and there are no analytics or advertising cookies. You can see and change your cookie choice on the cookies page.
byfaj_cookie_consent: remembers your cookie choice, for 12 months.byfaj_career_key: the random key that links your saved items to this browser, for 12 months. It is set when you open Getting ready or the job search pages, or keep an occupation..AspNetCore.Antiforgery: a security check that stops other sites sending forms in your name, until you close your browser.acaAffinity: keeps your visit on the same server, until you close your browser.
